The period of adolescence typically provides a bridge of several years between childhood and adulthood for observing and developing the skills and behaviors required to manage adult roles (Biddle, 1979; Davis, 1996). In fact, those years have been greatly extended in Western societies and continue to lengthen. Adolescent mothers obviously do not get this bridge. Adolescents usually carry several age-prescribed roles, including one set of behaviors as students, another as children or siblings in the family, and another as peers.
Consequently, being very young and lacking life experiences must not ultimately prevent us from being a good parent. This assumption raises many questions, however, that we will address next. Is it possible to transcend the negative health consequences of a woman having a baby at a very young age? Are adolescent mothers destined to be irresponsible, abusive, and neglectful parents? And how can the Taking Charge group curriculum possibly help teenage mothers with the monumental task of parenthood?
Taking Charge also provides some additional learning experiences and information about the world of work and the career paths for the older women in the group while supporting the plans of the younger ones. This is individually tailored to each group and situation. Chapters 3 and 4 investigate this approach in more detail. Summary In this chapter, we discussed the four critical life domains of education, personal relationships, parenting, and employment=career faced by adolescent mothers. These life domains are essential elements of the Taking Charge group curriculum and are based on empirical research on risk factors that impact the self-sufficiency of adolescent mothers and their overall quality of life.
