The person experiences a sense of alienation from his or her beliefs, opinions, and conscious intentions, and loses faith in social institutions and in the predictability, honesty, and sin­ cerity of self and others. At the same time, there is a sense that life is sim­ ply a set of roles played for social gain. Moreover, instead of a face-to-face daily validation from others, the strategic manipulator feels overwhelmed by the sheer number of relationships with others intruding into day-to-day life via various technologies.

For example, much has been written about the internal consistency of self-knowledge, given the fact that it is differentiated or multiple (Broughton, 1981; Rosenberg, 1997) but can also evidence a quality of unity in the domain we call the personal self (McAdams, 1997). Other researchers have addressed the task THE SELF 23 of how to conceptualize the self-knowledge system as an organization of coordinated schema-contents (Byrne, 1996; Byrne & Shavelson, 1996; Fiske & Taylor, 1991; Marsh & Hattie, 1996) and how such a system func­ tions when processing self-relevant information, given variation in its complexity and its relationship with self-esteem.
