In Upper Burma, where rainfall was adversely affected by the Arakan mountains, such an approach to agriculture was out of the question. The Shan farmers had to evolve a sophisticated method of water control along with a type of rice that could flourish on dry land or land with limited flooding. Their early-ripening variety of rice would transform Burmese agriculture as it later did farming in large parts of Thailand.
