Figure 5 shows the percentage of training and test patterns correctly classified after a fixed amount of training, for various fixed norm weights. As the norm weight increases the network overfits the training patterns. In this case all of the training patterns are classified correctly but none of the test patterns is correctly classified. With a small norm weight all of the RBFs have large receptive fields and therefore a significant response to all of the training and test patterns. The third of patterns correctly classified is determined by the random placement of the bias to the output units.

Thus boundary methods must be appropriate for all non-relational problems. The situation comes into focus, therefore, as a dichotomy. On the one hand we have learning tasks exhibiting high geometric separability. These are characteristically non-relational and are efficiently processed by boundary methods. On the other hand we have learning tasks exhibiting low geometric separability. These are characteristically relational and are not efficiently processed by boundary methods. One implication of this is that we could, if we like, make the separability distinction in terms of the difference between relational and non-relational tasks.

Each RBF is independent, so network initialization must ensure that the RBFs do not converge to the global mean and covariances. In some of the experiments that follow, the centre vectors have been initialized with small random values to break network symmetry. Also, some parameters remain fixed by using zero learning rates. The network dynamics are potentially analysable in terms of equation (6), although this analysis is not reported here.
